Beginner’s Guide to Mexican Food, Part II: Authentic Guacamole Recipe

Authentic recipe for Guacamole, a Mexican staple and party food extraordinaire!

Ingredients

  • 4 large ripe avocados
  • 1 lime
  • 1 white onion finely chopped
  • 1 clove of garlic finely minced
  • 1 jalapeno seeded and finely chopped (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon Salsa Roja or chopped tomato
  • 1 small bunch of cilantro leaves roughly chopped
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper

Instructions

  1. Halve avocados, remove pith and scoop flesh into a bowl.
  2. Immediately add juice of one lime.
  3. Use a fork to mash avocados to desired consistency.
  4. Stir onion, garlic, salsa roja, jalapeño (if using) and cilantro into the bowl.
  5. Stir well to combine and add plenty of salt and black pepper to taste.
  6. Serve immediately or read notes below on storing guacamole

Recipe Notes

Avocados LOVE to drink salt! If after adding the salt, your final result still seems bland and underseasoned, try adding a little more salt, tasting as you go!
